PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode paste composition for coating for manufacturing an electrode for an electric double layer capacitor which has small internal resistance and large capacity at low cost. SOLUTION: The composition for electrode formation for the electric double layer capacitor which consists principally of active carbon, a conductive assistant, a dispersant, a binder, and water is characterized in that: the conductive assistant consists of Ketjen black and acetylene black; the active carbon has a specific surface area of 1,300 to 2,800 m<SP>2</SP>/g, the Ketjen black has a specific surface area of 500 to 1,800 m<SP>2</SP>/g, and the acetylene black has a specific surface area of 30 to 90 m<SP>2</SP>/g; and the mixing mass ratio of the Ketjen black to acetylene black is 9:1 to 2:8, the mixing mass ratio of the active carbon to conductive agent is 100:3 to 100:10, and the mixing mass ratio of the dispersant and binder to the active carbon and conductive assistant is 100:3 to 100:10.
