<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide anode (negative electrode) and cathode (positive electrode) active materials reversibly cycling sodium ions, and a sodium ion battery using these active materials. <P>SOLUTION: A cathode is selected from a compound represented by a general formula of A<SB>a</SB>M<SB>b</SB>(XY<SB>4</SB>)<SB>c</SB>Z<SB>d</SB>. In the formula, A includes sodium, M is one or more metals including at least one metal capable of being oxidized to a higher valence state, Z is OH or a halogen, and XY<SB>4</SB>is a phosphate group or a similar group. The anode contains a carbon material, the carbon material has an interlayer distance d002 longer than that of graphite and is capable of being inserted with sodium ions.
