The device has a drive unit (8) for driving a furniture part relative to another part in a sliding and retracting manner. A transmission unit with a flexible elongate transmission element (9) e.g. cable, are formed in a single piece, for bringing a driving effect on the former part. A shaping unit enables the element to experience a dimensional change in a rolled condition. The element has a cross sectional change in a longitudinal direction. The element is reinforced such that transmission of tractive and/or compressive forces is enabled in a shearing direction for shearing the former part.
