<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase variable device preventing generation of hammering noise in the helical spline-engaging portion of the intermediate member interposed between the inner periphery of an outer cylinder portion at a driving force transfer side and the outer peripheral surface of an inner cylinder portion at a camshaft side. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The phase variable device comprises: an annular outer cylinder portion 10 to which the driving force of a crankshaft is transmitted; a driven-side annular inner cylinder portion 20 which is disposed coaxially with the outer cylinder portion 10 and extends to the camshaft 2; and the intermediate member 30 which is engaged with the outer and inner cylinder portions 10 and 20 in a helical spline manner, is interposed between the cylinder portions 10 and 20 and axially moves to change a phase between the portions 10 and 20. Further, the friction torque-adding members 51 and 55 are interposed between a flange 24 of the portion 20 side and the side face of a flange engagement groove 13A at the portion 10 side. Since the groove 13A is stepped and the outer peripheral edge of the flange 24 is made to normally face the stepped portion 13c of the groove 13A, excessive compression force does not act on the friction torque-adding members 51 and 55, and thus the durability of the members 51 and 55 is secured.
