<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase both recording magnetic field intensity and gradient, and also reduce the recording magnetic field leakage to the adjacent tracks to achieve high density recording when using a perpendicular magnetic recording head. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording head 1 has a recording head 10 and a reproducing head 30, and the recording head 10 has a main magnetic pole 11 and a magnetic-shield 15 formed on and around the main magnetic pole 11. The magnetic-shield 15 has a layered structure of a plurality of soft magnetic layers each different in saturation magnetic flux density. In this layered structure, a first soft magnetic layer 13 relatively high in saturation magnetic flux density is arranged at the main magnetic pole side, a second soft magnetic layer 14 relatively low in saturation magnetic flux density is arranged on it, and a third soft magnetic layer 12 relatively high in saturation magnetic flux density is arranged further on it.
