<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it hard to view pits on a surface of a glass substrate. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal device has a first substrate 10 having a first electrode 14 and a second electrode 15, a second substrate 20 disposed opposite the first substrate 10, and a liquid crystal layer 30 sandwiched between the first substrate 10 and second substrate 20. The second substrate 20 has a transparent substrate 20A, a polarizing plate 25 provided to the transparent substrate 20A on the opposite side from the liquid crystal layer 30, and a laminate film 40 provided between the transparent substrate 20A and polarizing plate 25 in contact with the transparent substrate 20A. The laminate film 40 includes an electrostatic shield film 23 having transparency, and a low-refractive-index film 24 provided in contact with the electrostatic shield film 23 and having transparency and a lower refractive index than the electromagnetic shield film 23 and transparent substrate 20A.
