<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abnormality detection device and an abnormality detection method of an oxygen sensor capable of detecting an abnormality of the sensor without exerting an influence on normal use of the oxygen sensor. <P>SOLUTION: In this device for detecting an abnormality of the oxygen sensor for outputting a signal corresponding to the amount of oxygen ion moving between an exhaust side electrode exposed to an exhaust space where an oxygen concentration is to be detected and an atmosphere side electrode exposed to the atmosphere, the amount of oxygen ion is detected in a direction in which a voltage is applied between the exhaust side electrode and the atmosphere side electrode so that oxygen ion is moved from the exhaust side electrode toward the atmosphere side electrode. Reversely, the amount of oxygen ion is detected in a direction in which a voltage is applied between the exhaust side electrode and the atmosphere side electrode so that oxygen ion is moved from the atmosphere side electrode toward the exhaust side electrode.
