PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cut an object to be sewn at an appropriate cutting pressure in accordance with the thickness of the object to be sewn. SOLUTION: A buttonhole sewing machine 1 comprises a cutter 30 and a cutter holder 50 and forms buttonholes in the object C to be sewn by them. It is provided with a pulse motor which makes the cutter 30 or the cutter holder 50 reciprocate between the point of origin and the cutting end position, a control means which controls driving of the pulse motor, an encoder which detects actual rotation pulses of the pulse motor, a location deviation calculating means which calculates the location deviation between driving pulses which are output from the control means to the pulse motor and actual detected pulses of the pulse motor which are detected by the encoder and a deviation storing means which stores the allowable limits of the driving pulses and the actual detected pulses. When the deviation calculated by the deviation calculating means exceeds the allowable limits, the control means keeps on correcting driving pulses until the cutter 30 or the cutter holder 50 reaches the cutting end position so that the location deviation may be reduced and outputs them to the pulse motor.
