<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable surface acoustic wave device of which outline occupied area size is almost equal to a size of a surface acoustic wave element incorporated in the surface acoustic wave device, and which has a high mass productivity and can be surface-mounted. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The surface acoustic wave device includes: a piezoelectric substrate 1; an excitation electrode 2 arranged on the piezoelectric substrate; an interconnection electrode 3 arranged on the piezoelectric substrate and connected to the excitation electrode 2; a cover body 4 having a recess forming a vibration space for the excitation electrode 2, the cover body 4 being arranged on the piezoelectric substrate in such a way that an outer peripheral edge of the cover body comes inside a directly upper region of the piezoelectric substrate 1; an insulative protector body 6 covering the cover body 4; an external electrode 7 arranged on the insulative protector body; a columnar conductor 5 arranged in the insulative protector body and connected to both the interconnection electrode 3 and external electrode 7.
