The mechanism (10) has an operating volume (14) arranged between an intake valve (12) and an exhaust valve (13). The intake and exhaust valves are switchable by a control unit (11) for opening and closing the operating volume. The operating volume is ventilatable over the intake and exhaust valves. The control unit is formed in such a manner that switching times of the intake and exhaust valves overlap with each other. The intake and exhaust valves are formed as a 2/2-way valve. A sensor (15) measures the pressure in the operating volume. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a valve mechanism with a control unit.
