<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection-type display in which a trouble of an abnormal scanning during the radiation of laser light is quickly and certainly detected, risk of locally concentrated radiation of the laser light is prevented, safety is fully high and suited to practicality, and to provide a method of controlling the projection-type display. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The projection type display comprises: a control means 24 which controls the light reflection angle of a scanning element 32, on the basis of an input image signal and allows optically modulated laser light to scan a screen 33; a light-receiving element 36 of which the light receiving region L is disposed at the approximately center part of the scanning region of operation detection light which is radiated and reflected at the scanning element 32, of which the light reflection angle is controlled; and a detection means 34d, which detects the state in which the scanning element 32 fails to normally scan the screen 33 with the optically modulated laser light, on the basis of the output of the light-receiving element 36.
