ELECTRONIC TELEVISION PROGRAM GUIDE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system wherein a television receiver displays a plurality of television programs and a viewer easily selects one of the programs to view the selected program.

SOLUTION: A data processing apparatus of a television receiver receives television program schedule information for television programs appearing on a plurality of television channels and stores the information to a memory. A user control apparatus is, e.g., a remote controller. A video display generator receives a video control command from a data processing apparatus and the information for television programs from the memory, and overlays the program schedule information on the television programs appearing on the television channels to display part of the program schedule information in at least one mode of operations of the television program guide. The data processing apparatus controls the video display generator by the video control command produced in response to a user control command and tunes the television receiver to the selected television channel.
