<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a workpiece holding device simplified in structure, brought into an assured and stable holding state according to the posture and shape of a work, and reducing a manufacturing cost. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This workpiece holding device has: an insertion rod 3 inserted into a through-hole 18 formed in the block-shaped work 2; a lock claw 7 locked to one end edge of the through-hole 18; an abutting member 4 abutting on the work 2 from the opposite side of the lock claw 7; and an abutting member drive means 13 for making the lock claw and the abutting member 4 hold the work 2 by drivingly advancing and retreating the abutting member 4. The abutting member 4 has: a first abutting surface 10 formed at an angle orthogonal to the axis of the insertion rod 3; and a second abutting surface 11 tilted relative to the axis of the insertion rod 3 in the position separated from the insertion rod 3. When the workpiece 2 is held by the lock claw 7 and the abutting member 4, at least one of the first abutting surface 10 and the second abutting surface 11 abuts on the workpiece 2.
