<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently cut a steel even when the steel with increased strength is cut according to the cross sectional shape thereof. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A torch 12 for heating the portion of an H-steel to be cut by a hot saw 6a is disposed near and forward of the hot saw 6a for cutting the H-steel 11 conveyed through a line in the advancing direction to move the torch together with the hot saw 6a. The cutting device comprises a controller for controlling the position of the torch 12 according to the shape of the H-steel 11 so that the distance between the torch 12 and the portion to be heated of the H-steel. Using a cutter, the portion to be cut is cut by the hot saw 6a while so controlling the position of the torch 12 that the distance between the torch 12 and the portion to be heated of the H-steel 11 is generally constant according to the shape of the H-steel 11 and heating the H-steel 11 by the torch 12.
