PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller unit that can switch a plurality of functions easily, and to provide a control method. SOLUTION: The controller unit UN1 includes a scanner image processing portion 2 and a controller CPU5. The scanner image processing portion 2 has: a scanner characteristic correcting portion 2a for converting image data read by a scanner unit UN5 into normalized image data; and a simple image processing portion 2b for forming image data by applying simple image processing to the converted image data. When a controller image processing portion 3 for forming image data output by applying image processing to the read image data is connected to the controller unit UN1, the controller CPU5 makes an operation of the simple image processing portion 2b invalid and controls forming image data by applying the image processing of the controller image processing portion 3 to the converted image data.
