The device (1) has a lever (15) connected to a lever holder (4) in such a manner that the lever is pivotable around an axis (17) arranged parallel to a cam shaft (2). The lever has a contact unit (23) that lies opposite to a cam (3). An intermediate lever (25) is pivotably supported around an axis (26). The lever holder, the lever, the cam and the intermediate lever are designed and arranged in such a manner that a valve (42) is opened and closed by rotation of the cam shaft, and the lift of the valve is adjusted by defined pivoting of the lever holder. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine.
