The present invention relates to process for preparing a polyisocyanate containing an iminooxadiazinedione group by trimerizing a portion of the isocyanate groups of a polyisocyanate, which does not contain iminooxadiazinedione groups, in the presence of a catalyst containing an anion corresponding to formula I) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>(Rf)n-CR'(3-n)-C(O)O- (I)<?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> wherein Rf is a perfluorinated C1-C30 radical which is optionally branched, cyclic and/or unsaturated, R' are identical or different, optionally heteroatom-containing substituents selected from H, C1-C20 alkyl and/or aryl and n is 1 or 2.
