<p>A device for processing paper sheets or the like does not cause a failure in conveyance of the paper sheets or the like. The device has a banknote inserting opening, a banknote conveying mechanism capable of conveying a banknote inserted from the banknote inserting opening, a banknote reading means (8) for reading the banknote conveyed by the banknote conveying mechanism, an authentication determining means for determining the authentication of the banknote read by the banknote reading means (8), a banknote determination processing section (230) for determining, before the reading of the banknote by the banknote reading means is completed, damage to the banknote based on the shape of that portion of the banknote which is read and on the shape of a banknote as a reference banknote, and a controlling means (200) for controlling conveyance of the banknote by the banknote conveying mechanism based on the result of the determination by the banknote determination processing section (230).</p> |
