<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable speed elevator improving the flexibility in changing the elevating speed of the elevator. <P>SOLUTION: The variable speed elevator 1 includes a car 3 arranged in a hoistway 2, a counterweight 4 arranged in the hoistway 2, a main rope 11 with one end connected to the car 2 and the other end connected to the counterweight 4, a hoisting machine 8 having a main sheave 9 wound with the main rope 11, and a control device 12 controlling drive of the hoisting machine 8. The counterweight 4 includes a mass increasing/decreasing mechanism 16 mechanically increasing/decreasing the mass of the counterweight 4 when the elevator 1 is operated. The counterweight 4 mechanically optionally changes overbalance by changing the mass.
