PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel pipe pile which can increase the propelling force thereof when penetrated into a bearing stratum, and to provide a method of constructing the same. SOLUTION: According to the structure of the steel pipe pile having excavating blades at a distal end of a steel pipe 2, a spiral blade 4 which is to be embedded in an intermediate stratum 6 above the bearing stratum 5 is arranged on the steel pipe pile 1 at a location not lower than an added value of a penetration depth of the steel pipe pile 1 away from an upper edge of an embedded portion of the steel pipe pile into the bearing stratum 5 and an overburden height. Further the spiral blade 4 functions to generate propelling force for pressing the steel pipe pile 1 downward when the steel pipe pile distal end is penetrated into the bearing stratum 5 while being rotated in a predetermined rotating direction. That is, when the steel pipe pile distal end is penetrated into the bearing stratum, the spiral blade is penetrated into the ground to generate the propelling force for pressing the steel pipe pile downward.
