Disclosed is a photocatalyst material which does not use platinum and can be obtained at low cost. The photocatalyst material is responsive even to visible light. Also disclosed is a method for producing the photocatalyst material. Specifically disclosed is a photocatalyst material containing tungsten oxide and tungsten carbide. More specifically disclosed is a photocatalyst material which is obtained by bringing tungsten oxide into contact with tungsten carbide. Also specifically disclosed is a method for producing such a photocatalyst material.
