The cannon has a piston (3) arranged in a working medium chamber (5) and shifted on a tubular body (2) and partially impinging the medium chamber. The piston is brought under pressure of a working medium in an area of closure valves (15, 16) between the medium chamber and a propellant chamber in an end position. The piston causes discharge of the medium from the medium chamber into the body under pressure of a propellant. The piston is moved into another end position, where the propellant is withdrawn in the latter end position by a passage opening (7) into the tubular body. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a universal cannon.
