PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To downsize an image forming apparatus without restricting the appearance, and to eliminate the risk of deteriorating the image quality of an image forming apparatus resulting from vibration due to the movement of a recording head or other factors without lowering the print speed of the image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: A reading carriage (first carriage) 54 is moved and stopped at a conveyed document reading position R, and then the image content of a reading document passing through the conveyed document reading position is read out by the reading carriage through a document glass 53 for DF. Such an image reader is provided with a means (solenoid) 70 for pressing the reading carriage against the document glass for DF at the conveyed document reading position when the information of a conveyed document is read. The reading carriage may be pressed against the supporting member of the document glass for DF, e.g. the housing 51 of the image reader 50, by the means 70 for pressing the reading carriage.
