PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can simply prevent damages of an encoder sheet at the time of removing jammed paper. SOLUTION: A main guide shaft 2 has a groove 2a of a U-shaped cross section opened downwards. An encoder sheet 7 is arranged inside the groove 2a. An encoder sensor 9 integrally provided to a carriage body 1 inserts into the groove 2a of the main guide shaft 2. The encoder sensor 9 can insert into the groove 2a of the main guide shaft 2 and has a groove portion 9a of a U-shape in cross section to allow also the encoder sheet 7 to insert thereinto. Normally, the main guide shaft 2 is constituted of a material having a high rigidity such as a metal or the like, and the encoder sheet 7 is protected by the main guide shaft 2 in the groove 2a due to the structure. Thus, when a user or a service person removes the jammed paper, there is no chance for them to touch the encoder sheet 7, thereby the encoder sheet 7 is prevented from any damage.
