PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain startability of an engine, when a pressure relief is caused in compression, in an engine having a lash adjuster. SOLUTION: After starting cranking, starting failure of the engine 1 by the pressure relief in the compression is detected (S202). The starting failure by the pressure relief can be detected based on an engine speed (a cranking engine speed Nc) in cranking. While setting the closing timing of an intake valve 17 in the first timing for starting at ordinary time in response to detection of a starting request, when detecting the starting failure by the pressure relief, a valve timing command signal is outputted for changing an operating angle (a VEL operating angleθiv) of the intake valve 17, and the closing timing of the intake valve 17 is changed to the second timing nearer to the bottom dead center than the first timing.
