544,009. Coating paper. DEHN, F. B. (Consolidated Water Power & Paper Co.). Sept. 20, 1940, No. 14397. [Class 96] Water is expressed mechanically from a web 5 as by a wet press 6, 7 the web 5 is then adjustably pressed against a heated, travelling surface, e.g. a Yankee dryer drum 9, by a roller 8 and lever-system 22, compacted by a roller 32, e.g. of layers of hard and soft rubber, and coated by a roll 49 with a mixture of high solids-content while moisture in the web is being vaporized, thus preventing penetration of coating material through the interstices in the web and so protecting the surface of the drum 9 from damage thereby. The coating mixture, e.g. of clay and adhesive is received from a reservoir at the nip between rolls 69, 75 and confined by dams 100 at each end, rolls 49, 55, 69, and 75 being adjustably spaced apart, supported on pivotted arms from beams 12, and pressed towards the drum 9 by a piston rod 78 &c. A smooth, substantially opaque paper may be produced with less than the usual amount of coating and with little or no calendering.
