The invention relates to the use of measurements of passing vehicles in the detection of a red light on urban traffic lights. The existing techniques for the measurement of traffic load and flow in urban streets by measuring passing vehicles presentthe disadvantage that they do not comprise suitable mechanisms or methods for the detection of cases when the passing vehicle is stopped or moves slowly due to a red light on a downward traffic light and not due to traffic jam. The present method solves the above problem by using optimization methods, mathematical models of traffic flow, and measurements of traffic flow and/or load. In particular, given (a) any mathematical model of traffic flow of the urban street network and (b) measurements of traffic flow and/or load, the invention makesuse of optimization methods for the determination of detection parameters of a red-light on the traffic light downwards to the passing vehicle. |
