PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image conversion method capable of obtaining a monochromatic image having high visibility of characters on a dot ground, an image processing apparatus for converting an image using this method, an image forming apparatus for forming the converted image, a computer program for converting a color image into a monochromatic image, and a recording medium for recording the computer program. SOLUTION: A character feature quantity calculating section 41 calculates the degree of edge as a character feature quantity from an inputted color image; a dot feature quantity calculating section 42 calculates the degree of complication as a dot feature quantity; and a photograph feature calculating section 43 calculates entropy value as a photographic feature quantity. A gray scale conversion processing section 25 detects a dot background region from an input image, on the basis of the calculated feature quantities, and converts the input color image into a monochromatic image, after correcting the concentration of the dot background region.
