<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medicament effectively inhibiting HIF-1α function, and usable for the therapy of, for example, cancer and pre-eclampsia. <P>SOLUTION: The oligonucleotide directed against the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is provided. The (HIF-1α)gene is provided for modulating the expression of the HIF-1α. The composition contains an oligonucleotide, targeted to a nucleic acid encoding the HIF-1α, especially antisense oligonucleotide. The method of using these compounds for modulation of HIF-1α expression and for the treatment of disease associated with the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α is provided. Examples of diseases are the cancer and the pre-eclampsia.
