PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drive a liquid crystal display device of field sequential system at high speed. SOLUTION: A display area 1 including a plurality of pixel electrodes 17 and a plurality of sub-display areas 1A, 1B, 1C is formed on a first transparent substrate 10, and a common electrode 21 is formed on a second transparent substrate 20. A liquid crystal layer LC is arranged between the pixel electrodes 17 and the common electrode 21. Each of the sub-display areas 1A, 1B, 1C is sequentially scanned by a vertical drive circuit 101 and a horizontal drive circuit 102. By control of a control circuit 103, a light source BL including a plurality of sub-light sources BLA, BLB, BLC connected to the control circuit 103 turns on a back light in display color corresponding to each sub-field whenever scanning of each of the sub-display areas 1A, 1B, 1C is completed, turns on and off independently of each of the sub-display areas 1A, 1B, 1C.
