Polystyrene of relatively low molecular weight is prepared by polymerizing monostyrene by heating in a solvent or mixture of solvents comprising one or more monocyclic or dicyclic alpha terpenes. Specified terpenes are dipentene (limonene), alpha pinene, alpha terpinene and alpha terpinolene. Solvents with which the terpenes may be admixed include aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. mineral spirits and xylene. The product may be used in the manufacture of film-forming compositions such as varnishes, lacquers and paints. Specification 573,809 is referred to. |
