PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To be able to reduce an area of a circuit section occupied by a signal readout circuit section (column processing section) for amplifying and reading a signal output from matrix-like arrangement of unit pixels in units of columns. SOLUTION: The imaging element has n pixel columns in a pixel array section (n is number of pixels in a horizontal direction). A plurality x of unit readout circuits 13-1 to 13-x are arranged for unit sets each consisting of m pixel columns, respectively (m is a quotient obtained by dividing n by an integer, including n). A reduction of the area of the column processing section consisting of the unit readout circuits 13-1 to 13-x can be achieved by sharing a part of each of the unit readout circuits 13-1 to 13-x, that are a reference switch 32, an input side capacitance 33 and an operational amplifier 34, by corresponding each of the plurality m of the pixel columns.
