<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the weight of a cam used in an internal combustion engine, and to increase the strength of the entire sliding surface of the cam including the end section. <P>SOLUTION: The intake cam 70 for driving the valves of the internal combustion engine is made of a lightweight metal. A recessed part rimmed with the base metal of the intake cam 70 is formed in the peripheral surface 71 of the intake cam 70. A sprayed layer 71B made of a high hard material is formed on the recessed part.
