PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and durability. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has an intermediate layer formed by irradiating a composition including a radiation curable compound with a radiation and a magnetic layer including ferromagnetic powder and a binder in this order on a non-magnetic supporting body. The intermediate layer includes silica particles originating from silica sol modified by an organic compound, and the organic compound has a 6-36C saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group and at least one group selected from the group consisting of a phosphoric acid group, a sulfonic acid group, carboxylic acid group, phosphonic acid group, a phosphate group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group and an amino group.
