[Class 82(ii)] A classification apparatus in which particles of different size but equivalent mass weight are separated and in which' settled solids are subjected to a plurality of washing actions to assist in the solution of soluble matter and in the separation of entrained slimes during uniform travel from inlet to discharge, comprises an inclined tank 5, Fig. 1, which has a feed-box 7 and an overflow weir 8 at its lower end. Settled sands are moved along an inclined bottom 5a to an elevated discharge lip 10 by a spiral conveyer 12, which may be raised when necessary by a lifting mechanism 18. The spiral conveyer is made up of three stretches X, Y and Z such that in the intermediate stretch Y, the width of the flights 13 is approximately half that of the flights in stretches X and Z, but the distance between the flights in stretch Y is correspondingly halved to maintain equal sands-contacting surfaces in the three flights. The flights 13 in stretches X and Z are supported directly from the shaft 14 by arms 22 whereas the narrower flights in stretch Y are supported by parallel bars 24, carried by spiders 23, Fig 4, at each end. Lifter sections 30, 30a are also provided to assist in the agitation and loosening of the settled solids and also to stabilize the spiral members 13 of the conveyer spiral 12. The bottom 5a of tank 5 is provided with a series of wash-boxes 25, disposed in the intermediate section of and transversely to the longitudinal axis of tank 5. Each wash-box 25, which may be above or below the liquid level in tank 5, is provided with a water inlet 26, Fig. 3 controlled by a valve 29.
