PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-voltage discharge lamp lighting device capable of maintaining a high-voltage pulse voltage for starting within a prescribed range even if the length of an output line is extended. SOLUTION: A starting pulse generating circuit 7 is composed of a transformer primary winding circuit consisting of a series connection of at least a capacitor C1, a primary winding N1 of a transformer T1, and a switching element Q7, a secondary winding circuit which connects a secondary winding N2 of the transformer T1 to a high-voltage discharge lamp 8, and impresses a high-voltage pulse voltage, in which the voltage generated in the primary winding N1 of the transformer T1 is stepped up, to the high-voltage discharge lamp 8, and a tertiary winding circuit having starting pulse detection circuits 11, 12 which detect the voltage level of the high-voltage pulse voltage by the voltage generated in the tertiary winding N3 provided in the transformer T1. The lighting device is provided with a capacitor voltage variable means 20 which controls the voltage of the capacitor C1 at the time of turning on of a switching element Q7 based on the detection result of the tertiary winding circuit, and a starting pulse control circuit which maintains the high-voltage pulse voltage generated by in the secondary winding circuit N2 of the transformer T1 within a prescribed range.
