PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of easily performing optical path adjustment between an illumination system and a synthesis system, and projecting a highly precise image. SOLUTION: The projector includes: an upper stage including a light source device emitting respective color light beams of R, G, B, and three first PBSs 130 for separating the respective color light beams to P polarization luminous flux and S polarization luminous flux; a lower stage including six liquid crystal panels 150 of a luminous flux transmission type fixed to the light incident surface of second PBSs 160 modulating the light of the luminous flux according to image information, the three second PBSs 160 disposed in positions superposing in a planar view with the first PBSs 130, second dichroic prisms 170 color synthesizing the respective color light beams emitted from the second PBSs 160, and a projection optical system 180 projecting the synthesized image light; and a light guide output system 140 for guiding the luminous flux from the first PBSs 130 to the liquid crystal panels 150.
