<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent sheets from being doubly fed by a simple configuration in a paper conveying device. <P>SOLUTION: A separating mechanism 30 is disposed near the front end S1 of a plurality of sheets S which are aligned in a stacked state and loaded on a lift plate 38. The separating mechanism 30 comprises: a first roller 46, a second roller 47, and a third roller 48; a separating belt 11 stretched therebetween; and a shaft member 50 as a part of a retard roller 14 which holds the separating belt 11 between the third roller 48 and itself. The separating belt 11 comprises, on the front surface, a plurality of projections 11a formed in the lateral direction of the belt and arranged at predetermined pitches in the circumferential direction. The separating belt 11 is rotated in the direction of an arrow R11 when the shaft member is rotated in the direction of an arrow R50, and vertical rotated from the lower side to the upper side while the projections 11a on the front surface are brought into contact with the front end S1 of the sheets S in a stacked state.
