PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of detecting a range of a document in simple configuration. SOLUTION: When a reading operation mode is a normal mode, a white-board is opposed to a CIS line sensor and document reading is then carried out (S005). When the reading operation mode is a mode for detecting and correcting a document position, a blackboard is opposed to the CIS line sensor and document reading is then carried out (S006). Since a region, out of the document, in read image data becomes black, document region detection is enabled.
