PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress transmission at two stages against a driver's intention by canceling either one of automatic transmission or transmission by steering gear change switches during the predetermined automatic transmission in an automatic transmission mode. SOLUTION: In this control device for an automatic transmission 2, the automatic transmission mode for automatically switching a shift stage in accordance with a traveling state and a manual gear change mode (direct mode) for temporarily switching a shift stage by operation of the steering gear change switches 46, 47 provided on or in the vicinity of a steering wheel 4 in the state where a shift lever 3 is operated in an automatic transmission mode selection position D are set. The control device is provided with a shift control means 100 for canceling either one of the predetermined automatic transmission or transmission in accordance with the operation of the steering gear change switches 46, 47 when shift operation in the same direction of upshift and downshift as that of the predetermined automatic transmission is performed by the steering gear change switches 46, 47, during the predetermined automatic transmission in the automatic transmission mode.
