PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gelling agent having excellent gelling performance to hydrophilic and lipophilic materials to be gelled. SOLUTION: The gelling agent contains at least one kind of amide compound represented by a general formula (1) R<SP>1</SP>-(CONHR<SP>2</SP>)n wherein n is an integer of 2-6, R<SP>1</SP>represents a residue obtained by removing all carboxyl groups from saturated or unsaturated 4-18C aliphatic polycarboxylic acid, a residue obtained by removing all carboxyl groups from 6-20C aliphatic polycarboxylic acid, or a residue obtained by removing all carboxyl groups from 6-20C aromatic polycarboxylic acid, and the n-number of R<SP>2</SP>are the same or different residues obtained by removing an amino group from saturated or unsaturated 6-30C aliphatic monoamine, residues obtained by removing an amino group from 5-30C aliphatic monoamine, or residues obtained by removing an amino group from 6-30C aromatic monoamine.
