A process for producing a 2-(1-hydroxyalkyl)cycloalkanone which comprises: a step (i) in which a cycloalkanone and an alkylaldehyde are continuously mixed with water and a base catalyst to form a reaction system and react the reactants; a step (ii) in which during the progress of the step (i), the reaction mixture is continuously discharged from the reaction system; and a step (iii) in which during the progress of the step (ii), water containing a base catalyst is further added to the reaction system so that the concentration of the base catalyst in the reaction system and/or the amount of water therein is kept constant.
