A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases is provided to prevent apoptosis of neuroblastoma cells and have anti-inflammatory activity. A pharmaceutical composition for treating neurodegenerative diseases comprises a polyphenolic compounds having anti-inflammatory activity or nerve protection effect. The polyphenolic compound comprises 3-methylcatechol, 4-methylcatechol, 4-tert-butylcatechol, and catechol. The anti-inflammatory activity of the pharmaceutical composition is to suppressing nitric oxide (NO) and TNF-alpha. The anti-inflammatory activity of the pharmaceutical composition is to inhibit the phosphorylation of P-38 MAPK (Mitogen-activated protein kinase). The neurodegenerative diseases are Alzheimer's diseases, Parkinson's diseases, and HIV dementia (human immunodeficiency virus-associated dementia).
