<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new optically anisotropic film useful for the field of a display device, a polarizer having the optical anisotropic film, and a liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: This optically anisotropic film contains smectite or mica, a molecule of a compound represented by the general formula (I) or the like which molecule is adsorbed onto the smectite or mica by an onium cation, and a polymer material. The polarizer and the liquid crystal display device have the optically anisotropic film. In the formula, A<SP>l</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>respectively represent a group selected from the group consisting of -O-, -NR- (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent), -S- and -CO-; Z represents an organic residue necessary for forming a benzo-fused ring or naphtho-fused ring; each R<SP>1</SP>represents a substituent; m represents an integer of 0-4; and R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>respectively represent a hydrogen atom or an electron-withdrawing substituent.
