Provided is method for driving a solid imaging device, in which a reading voltage can be reduced even in the case where a miniaturization advances so that a transfer electrode adjacent to a read electrode is smaller than the read electrode. In the driving method, a solid imaging device including a photodiode (210) and a vertical CCD (220) having a plurality of transfer electrodes are driven. A signal charge is read from the photodiode (210) by setting a predetermined transfer electrode of the read electrodes, at a potential (VH). The signal charge is transferred in a column direction by applying drive pulses having a potential (VM) and a potential (VL), to the transfer electrode. The read electrode has a larger area than that of the transfer electrode adjacent thereto. In the read of the signal charge, while the potential (VH) is being applied, one transfer electrode adjacent to the predetermined read electrode is set at the potential (VM), and the potentials of the other transfer electrode adjacent to the predetermined read electrode and the read electrode other than the predetermined electrode are changed.
