PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems that in coupling of an optical fiber and a slab optical waveguide, when glycerin droplets are used for coupling, glycerin can not be stably used for a long period of time because the glycerin is a liquid, and the glycerin has a weak point such as weakness in vibration and high temperature and it has many physical constraints in terms of stable presence of the droplets, and it is difficult to use the waveguide in a vertically erected form and to attach the optical fiber to the lower surface of the waveguide using the glycerin droplets. SOLUTION: In the coupling method, polymer gel 2 is used instead of the glycerin. The polymer gel 2 has various forms ranging from the one with low viscosity to the one nearly close to a solid, has proper adhesiveness and easily sticks to a slab-like optical waveguide surface.
