An apparatus and a method for discriminating paper money are provided to discriminate the kind of paper money by detecting color information and the existence of a hidden line inserted into the paper money. An apparatus for discriminating paper money includes a sensor for detecting a hidden line, a database, a central processing unit, and a display unit. The sensor for detecting the hidden line includes an infrared sensor(212), a color scanner(214), and an ultraviolet light emitting device(216). The infrared sensor grasps the hidden line domain of the paper money by using the transmittance of the light emitting unit and the reception of the infrared ray. The color scanner scans the hidden line domain of the paper money grasped by the infrared sensor. The color scanner scans the paper money when the ultraviolet light emitting device is turned on. The ultraviolet light emitting device irradiates the ultraviolet ray in the hidden line domain of the paper money.
