The method involves determining a point of time of a moving end of a moving part (25) of a fuel valve (15). A set of functions is determined at a value of signals and lies within a set of windows. The windows are moved relative to the upstream signal and adjusted in an optimal situation. A function value of one of the functions is formed depending upon the value of a pitch of another function within one of the windows and the pitch of third function within another window. An external value is adapted to the function value of the function. An independent claim is also included for a controlling or regulating device for an internal combustion engine.
