A modular, VOC-free, water-based sol-gel system (I) with at least one predeterminable property, containing at least four storage-stable, water-based, solvent-free inorganic, organic or metal-organic compounds matched for combination with one another as components of a multi-component sol-gel system, at least one of which is a base component. Independent claims are included for (1) coatings made by using (I), which are abrasion-resistant and/or corrosion-resistant and/or easy to clean and/or UV-resistant and/or solvent-resistant and/or temperature-resistant (2) a method (M1) for the production of application-specific sol-gel systems from at least two components, by determining the intended application of the system, comparing this with predetermined data, selecting components and the number of components from these data, selecting the ratios of quantities of these components and making the components (separately) in accordance with these selections (3) a method (M2) for adjusting the properties of a sol-gel system based on (I), by specifying at least one property of the required system, and selecting components of the system from predetermined data relating to quantities, numbers and types of components, so as to obtain a correlation with the specified properties (4) an evaluating device for performing M1, comprising acquisition unit(s) for the specified application of (I), comparison unit(s) to compare the application with data from a data storage unit, selection unit(s) for selecting components from the storage unit, selection unit(s) for selecting the number of components and/or their quantity ratios, and output unit(s) for the selected component data .
