The method involves providing a drive device (1) with an internal combustion engine (2) and an automatic transmission (4) e.g. continuously variable transmission (6), that is operatively connected to the combustion engine by a clutch (3) e.g. multi-disk clutch (5). Transmission-load moment is given to the combustion engine depending on a determined operating value of the automatic transmission. A control of the clutch and/or the given transmission-load moment is affected in a no-load operation of the drive device depending on the progression of rotational speed of the combustion engine.
